Ready, Set, Connect! Completes Its First Quarter

  • December 17, 2014
  • General

Hello, World!

The Ready, Set, Connect! team has successfully reached its first quarter!

In October and November, interns learned the basics of digital literacy tutoring for the diverse patronage at Oakland Public Librarybranches. They shared their knowledge of technology with over 200 patrons in personalized digital tutoring and assistance. Over 40 patrons are engaging in ongoing sessions.

In addition to their work in the community, the RSC! interns received professional development and introductions to different careers in the tech field. Social media for business and marketing, social media for community outreach, video interviewing techniques, and public speaking are some of the trainings they have attended. They have also produced weekly deliverables that relate to the goals defined for them in the program and which will ultimately contribute to a portfolio by the end of the program.

RSC! Interns and Cynthia

Some of the RSC! interns pose with guest presenter, trainer, engineer, business owner, mentor, and Oakland-raised resident Cynthia Mackey, CEO of Winning Strategies, LLC.

This month, we will go on our first field trip and learn about the range of careers in data analysis and management in education. Interns will have an opportunity to link up with professionals who work with Schoolzilla and will learn about their paths and possible internship and work opportunities.

Schoolzilla

In 2015, we will do a few more field trips and experience different work spaces, learn about career possibilities in tech, make connections with mentors and professionals, develop polished resumes and LinkedIn profiles, and work on projects that will be presented at the end of the program. This will be an exciting year, and I am honored to be part of RSC!

If you or someone you know anyone who can share their skills, time, expertise, or mentorship with some or all of our youth, please email me at andrea@ctnbayarea.org. I would also appreciate any leads on internship opportunities, entry-level tech jobs, STEM scholarships, or resources to share with the RSC! team.

Thank you all and happy holidays!

Andrea
